:: TRAVELLING :: THE WAY THROUGH ROMANCE ::
Shakespeare in Verona

" But… soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun..." These famous verses recall one of the better known episodes of Shakespeare’s Italian tragedies.

Verona is not just famous for art and business: the richness of its museums, churches and monuments, the opera passion the Arena arises, and the frenetic activity of the Fair accompany the romantic charm of the city, represented by the world’s most famous love story.

As in all excessively celebrated legends, Romeo and Juliet’s story can easily degenerate and become syrupy, but a huge number of tourists consider it impossible to miss visiting the places of the two celebrated lovers.

As well as finding a general response in the atmosphere of Verona’s medieval environment, Romeo and Juliet’s loving affair finds solid witnesses in architecture and real spaces, which are visited every year by millions of lovers or passers through the city.

The so-called Juliet’s home in Via Cappello is one of these. It is a tall building, probably originating in the XIII century, which you can visit a few paces way from Piazza Erbe. The Home shows a beautiful brick façade, which tradition indicates as the home of the Capulet’s, the Verona family enemy of the Montague’s, to whom Romeo belonged.

In the inner courtyard, restore din recent years, the famous balcony can be seen as told in the legend; next to it lies a tombstone depicting, in English and Italian, the famous verses of the Shakespearian tragedy. A ritual all visitors perform is the caress on the arm and breast of the girl’s bronze statue, hoping to meet or keep eternal love.

In Via delle Arche Scaligere the other topical location of the legend is found: Romeo’s home. It is a beauitufl medieval brick front house with original crenellation. According to popular tradition it was the house property of the Montague, young Romeo’s family. Unfortunately, because of the precariousness of the private building, a visit to the inner courtyard is not allowed.
