It's the Amaretto di Saronno, an established "made in Italy" product, on the main International markets. An amber liqueur, of special flavour, that of the almond, a sweet combination in cocktails and long drinks.
Amaretto has a peculiar history: in 1925 Bernardo Luini, passionate and talented painter from Leonardo da Vinci's school of art, received the job from the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie of Saronno, to paint a fresco of the Madonna.
He found the perfect 'model' to use for this painting in a young innkeeper who, fallen totally in love with the painter, created for him a sweet, delicately almond-flavoured liqueur as a gesture of love... and this was the first bottle of the Amaretto DI Saronno.
The recipe of this Italian liqueur has remained unchanged with the passing of the time: pure alcohol, caramelised sugar and the essence of seventeen herbs and fruits flavoured in oil obtained from apricot stones.
What has changed throughout the years is the design of the bottle, until a craftsman of the Murano glass designed the 'squared bottle', with rounded corners, which has become a symbol of quality and tradition for the DI Saronno Originale'.
