During the whole year Italy hosts a countless number of festivals and gastronomic fairs, but with the arrival of the summer they increase for the joy of tourists and residents alike. The fish festival in Varigotti unites many lovers of this cuisine in three dates: in June, July and August. The fair has been organised for several years now by the Società di Pubblica Assistenza Croce Bianca Varigotti, to finance vehicle maintenance and management expenses.
Originally distributed within the inspiring frame of the Varigotti pier, after several years of inactivity, the event was moved to the rooms and the arcades of what used to be the Elementary School. A suitable environment, with over 400 seats, which offers new facilities to guarantee sanitary laws and a suitable reception: part of the tables under the shelter of the arcades, games for children, a dance floor with live music, and a garden.
The menu is truly rich and inviting: cleaned fish fry-up and tattlers; green muscles, fresh, simmered in a pan with white wine, parsley, garlic; trenette Ligurian style seasoned with homemade pesto, green beans and potatoes; little "focacce", bits of fried bread pastry, hot and crunchy; sea salad, with tattlers, moscardini (tiny polyps) and muscles boiled and seasoned with olives, cold pickled peppers; and then watermelon and cakes. All of this watered down with white and red wine.
The Varigotti Fish Festival is all about wholesome seaside and Ligurian cuisine, but it also offers the opportunity to contribute to a good cause, supporting Public Assistance. It's worth a trip!
