Dario Fo, a counter-current "Nobel"

An actor, director, and author of political and social satire: it is impossible to give a definition of Dario Fo. Born in Sangiano in 1926, he completes his studies in the Brera Academy and enrols in the Architecture Department of the Milan Polytechnic.

At the beginning of the 50’s he starts to write for radio and television, the "great" Franco Parenti introduces him into the RAI  (State Television) where he undersigns and acts in "Poer nano (1953), "Il dito nell'occhio" and "Sani da legare".

He also has his debut in film, in 1955 he is co-writer and actor in "Lo svitato" directed by Carlo Lizzani; two years later he puts on the scene for Franca Rame "Ladri manichini e donne nude" and "Comica finale".

With his wife Franca Rame he creates an artistic bond which continues today. In 1959 they create a permanent company with which they perform, among others,  "Gli arcangeli non giocano a flipper",  "Isabella tre caravelle e un cacciaballe", "Settimo ruba un po' meno", and "La Signora è da buttare".

In 1963, the Fo-Rame couple is invited to take part in "Canzonissima" a popular family TV-show on RAI. Their political satire acts are immediately struck with censure and the two artists prefer to abandon the scene rather than give up their ideas.

They return to theatre and give shape to decidedly alternative shows full of social and political satire, in 1969 with "Mistero Buffo"  - a monologue based on "grammelot" , a mix of modern phonems and disused Po valley dialects – and they become very popular.

Their political and social commitment never ceases. The 70’s see their representation of: "Morte accidentale di un anarchico", "Pum, pum, chi è? La Polizia",  "Non si paga, non si paga", "Il Fanfani rapito"; at that time Dario Fo works a lot abroad as well and in 1979 he directs "L'histoire du soldat" of  Stravinskij for the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

In 1997 , Dario Fo receives the Nobel prize for literature.
