Costa Europa, acquired by the American group Holland America Line, underwent refurbishing works: the most relevant interventions took place in the creation of a 450 places ballroom, the creation of a club reserved for the youngest guests, and the upgrading of the Suites and the Casino.

Costa Europa is the first of a series of four ships which, before the end of 2004, will enrich Costa Crociere's fleet: in the summer of 2003 it should be the entry time for Costa Mediterranea, twin of the admiral Costa Atlantica and currently under construction in Finnish shipyards; at the end of the same year, Costa Fortuna should arrive, and in 2004 its twin, Costa Magica, should enter the service.

There are various itineraries offered by Costa Europa to discover the Mediterranean and the Northern Europe. Starting by the opening cruise, departing from the 27th to the 29th of April 2002, which in 11 days sees the Greek islands; next on schedule a cruise to the discovery of the Canary islands. For the summer, from May to August, the itinerary moves to Northern Europe, for cruises of 10-14 days to discover the Norwegian Fiords, North Cape and the Baltic Capitals. In autumn, on the other hand, from September to October, Costa Europa will set out sail from Genoa for 11 day cruises at the discovery of the Canary and Greek Islands, as well as for a mini three-day cruise between Barcelona and Cannes.
