An object for couples is the theme for the exhibition «Design for two: love design?» which the Istituto Europeo di Design and Caimi Brevetti have set up in Milan in the occasion of the Salone del Mobile. Objects, drawings, images, situations and environments dedicated to couples, intended as a whole of the relations that can be created among two people – friends, lovers, husband and wife, mother and child - or between a person and a pet: design becomes this way a symbol of sharing and reciprocal interaction. In the exhibition event, students of the various branches (Milan, Rome, Turin, Madrid) have presented through a photograph, a project or an environment, their own personal interpretation of the couple relationship observed by the original perspective of the world of design.
Involved in the project, the main Italian and foreign magazines, who have proposed objects and images on the topic. Also, a small book-catalogue bears witness to the proposals born of the project, and collects the remarks of important opinion leaders on the «design for couples».
Projects on show express the symbolic value of the use of objects by two people at the same time: explicit is a highlighting of the reciprocal exchange process, and the couple ‘s complicity, which yields a sharing of environments and situations that represent the living together.
There’s the «Viceversa» bench, which can be turned upside down, to respond to the various relations that can be set up in a couple; the double scales, to «share the weight» in two. «Why me» is the object that avoids the couple crisis, becoming an impartial referee, whereas, to respect each other’s space, there is the «Union» line, which enables respect for differences. Among magazines’ offers, the project «Loft per due», where the house for a young couple creates spaces avoiding interferences; the «couple sofà», a sofa that divides in two identical single portions; and the «Madamejolie», specifically made for love.
