After studying Drama at the Academy "Silvio d'Amico" in Rome, he had his theatre debut and later arrived in television where he made a name for himself with "David Copperfield" - from the Dickens novel - and "And the stars watch on" by Cronin. He starts with cinema in 1965 with a small part in "Mud on the metropolis" by Henry Wilson. The following year, directed by Lina Wertmuller, he acts in two musical movies next to Rita Pavone.
In the following years, Giannini plays roles of various depths, in 1970 he works with Ettore Scola in "Dramma della gelosia, tutti i particolari in cronaca", in 1972 he acts in "La prima notte di quiete" by Valerio Zurlini, and in the same year he obtains the lead in "Mimì metallurgico ferito nell'onore" co-starring with Mariangela Melato and directed once more by Wertmuller.
The performance is perfect and it starts a professional bond with the Milanese actress but especially with the director who will lead him to an Oscar nomination for the movie "Pasqualino Settebellezze" and to win the Palme d'Or come as "Best Actor" at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973 for his performance in "Film d'amore e d'anarchia ovvero: stamattina alle 10 in via dei fiori nella nota casa di tolleranza...".
He has worked with major directors: Luchino Visconti - "L'Innocente", in 1976 - , Franco Brusati, Mauro Bolognini, Giuliano Montaldo, Mario Monicelli.
Giancarlo Giannini’s career also takes off abroad, being one of the very few Italian actors to work in the United States and in other countries. This starts with Fassbinder who casts him with Hanna Schygulla in "Lili Marleen". With Francis Ford Coppola he acts in an episode of "New York Stories", the following year he was with Hopkins in "Hannibal" under Ridley Scott’s direction.
Giancarlo Giannini is an extraordinarily versatile actor who has given life to multifaceted characters. His intense and deep gaze, his “knowledgeable” face, his barely hinted smile, his warm and intense voice give rise to sensations that make him unforgettable.
