Antonio Capuano speaks of Luna Rossa
Luna Rossa is the title of Neapolitan director Antonio Capuano’s latest film. It is a very long flashback told by a penitent on the history of the Cammarano family whom from the early 70’s have been managing power with cruelty and no mercy in a Naples that is never seen. Among the “clan”’s actors are Toni Servillo, Licia Maglietta and Carlo Cecchi.
What is Luna Rossa about? Luna Rossa is a film that observes the fall and the implosion of a large camorra family by one of their latest offspring, Oreste, who having had enough of the mortuary logic, of the abuse of power and the violence decides to use the same means to destroy the family and then give himself up to justice.
Why did you use the key of Greek tragedy? Because I wanted to acquire a non realistic style, I wanted the whole film not to be connected to a style that belongs to news reports, to journalism and television but not so much to the cinema. Cinema can be chosen, one seeks a relationship with the film and I believe that this has to be a deeper rapport, more important. Cinema should be a reflection on things which are already known, but with a higher style, more abstract and more ethical.
In Luna Rossa we immerse in various differing atmospheres, how did you achieve this result? The architectonic and aesthetical project of the film is on the model of the Greek tragedy, that is telling the contemporaneity using an archetypal tale. It is not the first time that it is done and often the opposite was also done, telling the ancient, like Hamlet or Medea, in modern clothes.
The support of the actors is also very strong. I needed important actors for this film because the writing already let us think about a commitment by actors with a great sensitivity, that is actors who are artists. Actors are great when they can give to you, when they bring their talent and their own selves into a film.
Is the film out in Naples? Yes, it came out all over Italy but in minor cinema halls and this is damaging the film, giving it an aura of passed film, because the places are inappropriate. December.2001
