"Il pupone" (translator's note: the handsome one, more or less, from Roman speech), is the idol of Roma football supporters and beyond doubt one of the most talented Italian players. Year 2000 was the year of his "coming of age" and his recognition as a football champion. The European cup were the showcase for his professional growth and the quality reached by the National "Checco", who has proven he's become a complete player, a leader capable of leading any team to victory.Born in Rome the 27th of September 1976 by mum Fiorella and dad Enzo he starts kicking away in his local neighbourhood team: San Giovanni. A thorough Roma supporter even then, he arrives in Trigoria in 1989. He is immediately noticed in the youth championships and his role is already that of a midfielder, equipped with uncommon football technique and intelligence. He owes his debut in the First league to Vujadin Boskov, the 28th March '93 (Roma-Brescia 2-0).
From that moment on his entry into the team is ever more frequent, but it's Carletto Mazzone who makes him a reference point for the team and opens his "goleador" career (Roma- Foggia 4 September 94). His completion of formation comes with the technical management of Zeman; from a full midfielder, Totti is moved on to the left behind the two attackers with faculty of striking towards the goal. It's his boom. Totti becomes one of the strongest and most complete players of the championship and sees his final acknowledging on the International scene in "Euro2000", owing also to that "spoon" penalty shot in the semi-final against Holland which has delighted the world.
More recently in the news for the World cup, where indeed his prowess spoke for itself, he was the symbol of Italy's misfortune, when he was expelled from the match, causing the despair of his team manager, Trapattoni, and of million of Italian and International fans. Nevertheless, as Trapattoni very recently announced, "Italy is all set, not to start anew, but to continue". And, so we bet, is Totti.
