Rossini Opera Festival was created in 1980 through decision of the Municipality of Pesaro, giving homage to the musical genius of its citizen and for the circulation and awareness of his work.An owed gesture almost, that of the municipal administration, strong of Rossini's full artistic inheritance, which already gave life to the Conservatory and the Foundation. For its importance in 1985 it became an Independent Organization and, decisive for the International acclaim of the Festival, was the finding of the «Il Viaggio a Reims», Rossini's legendary disappeared score, chanced upon by Abbado and by him directed in Pesaro.
Interest for Rossini's music grew, and the organisation at the end of the middle nineties transforms again, with the declared intent to make Rossini known throughout the world and make new collaborations with the Universities of the whole world.
Privates also enter the management of the new moral organisation, such as the Cassa di Risparmio di Pesaro, the Banca Popolare Pesarese e Ravennate, the Scavolini Foundation. The theatrical places of the festival area the Rossini theatre, the palafestival, the Teatro Sperimentale and the Auditorium Pedrotti.
The Rossini theatre is the historical seat of the event. Built in 1637 as Teatro del Sole it was rebuilt in 1818.
