:: SPECIAL REPORTS :: THE SANREMO FESTIVAL ::
6 March 2002 - Sanremo: The debut of the Young

With the baggage starting to fill up with the usual and sterile polemics tied into to charts and juries, the festival's second evening started with the performance of the first eight young with the subsequent elimination of the last three in the chart.

With them, the ten Big came on stage, allowing us to hear the past evening's song and re-judge it with a different ear. The artistic line also starts to make itself clear, with the connections with the post-Festival, managed almost entirely by the "Quelli del calcio" gang, the misbehaving counterpart of the TV show. As if that weren't enough the guest for the evening was doctor Merope Generosa, a.k.a. Anna Marchesini, a character launched by Fabio Fazio during the past Sunday show.

Thus Baudo cleverly seeks a tie of continuity with the recent '99/2000 editions, granting here and there a splash of national-popular spirit. A tango for Arcuri, a waltz for Belvedere and the presence of the multi-medallist for swimming Massimiliano Rosolino (finally someone in Italian television who can speak proper English) per to announce the International guests: Anastacia, who sung the already famous "Paid my dues " and Sarah Connors.

In this scenario the New Offers struck for the immediacy of their songs, which, on average, seemed perhaps simpler but also far more incisive than their more famous colleagues. Also the performances were good, especially if we consider Anna Tatangelo (who resulted the best according to the jury) who is only 14 years old and therefore has huge space for improvement.

Musical types presented by the young have embraced various different musical styles thus showing, with the freshness of their offer, that Italian music is by now destined to change, contaminating ever more with different cultures and sound suggestions which have become part of the new musical generation's DNA.

So we have Offspring-style rock of Giuliodorme or Daniele Vit's rhythm & blues, the beautiful pop song of the Off Side and the melodic " Ricomincerei" by Gianni Fiorellino. The evening is won by Tatangelo and, with Giuliodorme and Off Side, Giacomo Celentano, son of the more famous Adriano, is disqualified.

Among the Big Juries reappraise Fiordaliso, who, honestly, left us unchanged from the night before, and the Leali - Corna couple whose song recalled a little the theme song from the animated motion picture " Beauty and the Beast" but which heard a second time reveals itself to be an excellent track.

Good also for Silvestri and Nino D'Angelo with his new artistic direction, which immerses in the ethnic genre. Alexia is confirmed, but Loredana Bertè leaves dissatisfied also tonight, having accustomed us to much more energetic songs and performances.

At the conclusion of the evening the jury emitted its first verdict for the New Offers section. The first five passed the stage and access the final evening of Friday 8th of March, whereas the last three are eliminated.

Those that access the final:

 1  Anna Tatangelo
 2  Gianni Fiorellino
 3  78 Bit
 4  Botero
 5  Daniele Vit

Eliminated:

 6  Giuliodorme
 7  Off Side
 8  Giacomo Celentano
