A world of its own, made of threads, fabrics, wood and gestures; this is the world of puppets, of fairy tales and the theatre of the "commedia dell'arte".The city of Parma dedicates an entire museum to this ancient art, "Il Castello dei Burattini", hosted in the San Paolo context in via Melloni.
Parma has seen the birth of one of the most famous and important "puppeteer" families in Italy, the Ferrari family, which has reached its fourth generation. It is owing to Giordano Ferrari that Parma can now host such a museum, through a collection which has few rivals in Europe.
In the 300 square meters of the millenary complex, the permanent exhibition was designed as a place that's alive, and not just the evidence of a memory.
A patrimony of 1.500 between marionettes and puppets, 400 scene paintings, 200 scripts and 400 volumes on figure theatre, as well as some "treats" such as various 18th century works, an important nineteenth century group and a Sicilian puppet background.
