"Kandinsky, Vrubel, Jawlensky and Russian artists in Genova and in the Riviera" is an exhibition on the intense relationship uniting Liguria and Russia between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, illustrating it through extraordinary works of art.The tie that had begun in the 19th century reached its peak throughout the two last centuries and in particular, in the years between the second half of the 19th century and 1917, when Liguria became on of the favourite destinations both for "health tourists" who arrived in the Riviera to heal from tuberculosis and for nuclei of political emigration.
The exhibition articulates in many parts, some of prevalently historical character, with testimonials concerning outstanding artists and figures who stayed in Liguria (from Gogol to Marina Cvetaeva, from Gorky to Achmatova, from Tchaikovsky to Skrjabin, from Czar Nicholas I to Czarina Maria Aleksandrovna), others presenting the masterpieces of famous and less famous Russian artists, who passed through Liguria. Amle space is dedicated to the works of Vassily Kandinsky, of Alexey von Jawlensky, and of Michail Vrubel, but Kiprensky, Scedrin, Nikolaj Ge, Repin, Benois, Ajvazovskij, Bogoljubov, Levitan, Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, Grabar, Petrov-Vodkin, Alexandra Exter, Mashkov, Kalmakov, Archipov, Alexander Pavel e Anna Maria Swedomskj are also shown.
In the works of all these artists the human and natural landscape, as Arnaldo Bagnasco, Chairman of Palazzo Ducale, states, "is shown through the emotion and the view of those coming from afar and who "recount" us through the filter of a differing culture and history ".
Vrubel's works also shown are, as well as some Views of Portofino, those orientalist and visionary works that make him one of the most important painters of European Symbolism, a bridge between 19th century realism and the experimenting of the avant-gardes.
Kandinsky is shown through some landscapes of the Tigullio, and a s election of works comprised between the end of the 19th century and then of the twenties, which mark the moment of passage for the artists towards definitive abstraction.
For Jawlensky some landscapes of the Bordighera are on display, where Expressionism's bright colours are further enlivened by the Riviera's sun. Through his eyes even Liguria's winter visions become colour explosions.
Works are on loan form the museum of St. Petersburg, Hermitage's State Museum, the Russian State Museum, The National Library and the State Museum of Theatre and mUsic, Moscow's Tretiakov Gallery, Kiev's Russian Museum, Erevan's Armenia National Gallery, the Lenbachhaus Gallery and Monaco's Gabriel Münter and Johannes Eichner Foundation, Hannover's Sprengel Museum, Dortmund Museum am Ostwall, Paris' Centre Georges Pompidou's National Museum of Modern Art, Locarno's Jawlensky Foundation and Archive, New York's Guggenheim Museum and Pasadena's Norton Simon Museum, Florence's Uffizi Gallery and other private and public collections.
