Bologna inherits Kazuo Ohno

Kazuo Ohno, the founder of Butoh dancing, the modern Japanese dancing, has donated a complete copy of his archive, an ocean of material from the 40’s to the present day, to the department of Music and Show business of the University of Bologna (Dams), in the context of the activities of the Centre La Soffitta.

It is an enormous amount of material; videos and dvds from the shows, films, posters, photographic panels, files, drawings, writings, notes. It is the first convention in the wolrd signed by the master, born in Hokkaido and ninety-five today, exclusively for Italy.

A delegation of the Bologna University took part to the farewell to the stage of the master, who has ideally passed baton to his son, Yoshito.  The master was presented with the silver seal of the Alma Mater Studiorum.

Kazuo Ohno has elaborated an absolutely unique version of Japanese butoh dancing, the traditional theatre dancing which is structured in energetic, contorted and painful forms. Ohno gave them a lyrical, soft, poetic shape, reaching world fame when already in his seventies with "Admiring La Argentina" (1977),  a perfect icon of his chiselled and introverted style, often incarnated under feminine appearances.
