Italian cooperation with Peru, as a source of collaboration towards the country agreed and offered during the eighties, has undergone an important change in the nineties owed to the reduction of the overall balance and a greater attention to geographical priorities, carried out by the government and by Parliament in the last ten years. There are currently 14 projects developed mostly by Italian non-governmental organisms operating in Peru in the fields of health, education, environment protection, agriculture, social and energy.
During the past year, however, these projects have had a further boost through important initiatives, not just from a financial point of view, but also from a political one. A contribution to the “Bi-National Plan” was set up for the Per-Ecuador border region’s development, through he financing of a sanitary and agricultural project, for a total amount of 4,5 billion lira
Through the environment protection project a plan was proposed for development alternative to cocaine cultivation in the Valleys of Tambopata and Inambari, in the department of Puno, with the financing of 4 billion lira “donation” through the United Nation’s fight against drugs program (PNUFID).
A further financing of 2 billion lira to the project for the protection of Andes biodiversity, developed through the United Nations Development Program (PNUFID).
And finally the proposal of conversion of the Peruvian debt in Italy in programs of economic and social development for the fight against poverty, in the frame of the initiatives started during Jubilee 2000 for the reduction of International debt of developing countries.
This proposals are added also to the initiatives of cooperation with Peru through the United Nations system and the European Union, of which Italy is one of the highest contributors.
