There are no separate figures, but according to a research conducted by Mauro Grassi, responsible for the Tuscany Region Planning and Control Office, on the basis of figures by Cerved, companies operating in the so-called New Economy in this region are more than 4.300. Of these, almost 3 thousand are to be found in what is called Arno Valley, precisely because of the high concentration of companies operating in this field.

Naturally, against the almost 14 thousand Lombardy companies, Tuscany’s figure is a small thing, but if we relate it to the population, the over 400 companies of the province of Prato, or the almost 1500 in Florence, mark a truly enviable concentration: respectively 194.5 and 155.7 companies every 100 thousand residents (against the 153,3 of Lombardy).

These numbers are made up not only of small situations, but also by large companies. In waves, not just in the Pisa district and the Arno Valley, but the whole of Tuscany has seen a transformation of its production fabric. The first ones to get there, at the beginning of the Nineties, were computer products distributors. Then, also due to positive “externality” of University labs, this region has seen a bloom of computer companies.

In the end research and development offices for large companies also arrived to take nourishment form this fertile land. Tuscany today, therefore, holds an enviable position in an economy field that is decidedly dynamic, which offers many prospects but does not take kindly to makeshift and off the cuff situations.
