Born in London in 1924, and still considered one of the greatest English living sculptors, Anthony Caro exhibits until the 4th of May an interesting number of works at the Galleria Lawrence Rubin in Milan.A central figure of sculpture in the last fifty years, Caro, a distinct white-haired Englishman with a lively spirit, was a student and collaborator of Henry Moore in the early 50's. Initially oriented towards a sculpture of anthropomorphic shape, Caro later leave sit, to dedicate himself to an antirational figurativeness, where casual objects and relicts of the industrial society are recovered and assembled into new shapes, according to an approach which has lots in common with David Smith or Mark di Suvero and which finds its roots in the artistic experiences of the early century Avant-gardes.
The materials he uses are iron, and, more seldom, wood, which tie together to form works with unusual profiles and yet of extraordinary beauty. Sizes vary, from the over 3 metres per 4 of "Rouge Madras" (1965) to the beautiful "Harmonium" (2001), 20 cm. per 30, passing through a score of pieces that mark an ideal path through Caro's work from 1965 to today. Shapes are geometrical, yet they possess their own fluidity and an elasticity that are typical of much sculpture in the past, and in the first place typical also of Moore's production.
Caro is an artist recognised at an international level, with an artistic path that is pinpointed by many important exhibitions which have seen him as a protagonist both in Italy and abroad: his works were exhibited at New York's MoMA, at London's Serpentine Gallery, at the Biennale in Venice. In 1992 he received the Prize of the Emperor of Japan for sculpture. A polyhedrical and versatile artist, Caro has also worked with architect Norman Foster at the construction of the «Millennium Bridge», the London bridge connecting the Tate Modern to St. Paul's borough.
