Futurism in Milan
At the PAC (Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea) in Milan, until the 28th of April, a new exhibition is open dedicated to Futurism and organised by Maria Teresa Fiorio, director of the Civiche Raccolte d'Arte Milanesi. One more the past few years dedicated to this totally Italian avant-garde, PAC's exhibition is not and does not mean to be an exhibition on Futurism; it tries to show the importance that this movement has had in the city of Milan and for many collectors, from whose donations this collection is borne, certainly one of the most complete and exhaustive on the subject. The visit opens with an early 20th century Boccioni - certainly the most present artist in the exhibition - to then continue, through about eighty works, with Balls, Funi, Soffici, Dottori, Carrà and some splendid works by Sironi, all paintings that, starting from the legacy of Milanese collector Antonio Canavese in 1934, are the result of generous donations from the Milanese collections of the families Junker, Grassi and Boschi and that - with the nucleus of futurist works from the Civico Museo d'Arte Moderna in Palazzo Reale (CIMAC, currently closed), will make up the central nucleus of the new Arengario Museum, designed by architect Italo Rota and which should be ready by 2005. The only shortcoming of the exhibit is the setting up: it is difficult to understand the logic of this path where works of undoubted beauty are relegated in odd irrelevant places and, especially, how they are hanging on backgrounds which add nothing to the paintings, if not an element of annoyance.
