The Museo della Scala moves home
The doors to the rich halls of the historical gallery, chosen by the greatest composers of the 1800's to show their most famous operas, such as Verdi's Falstaff and Otello and Puccini's Turandot have closed for restoration. An undertaking that is predicted to last about two years; in the meantime the seat of the theatre will be transferred in the Bicocca neighbourhood, north of Milan in the premises of the Teatro degli Arcimboldi, where the museum moves to Corso Magenta 71, still in the city centre. The Museo della Scala historically takes shape in the years between 1911 and 1913, from a group of exponents of some of Milan's "great families", and is artistically born with the Sambon collection, which has meant the first and most sizeable nucleus of the future Museum. Italy's main theatre, and true temple of opera as well as the centre for the operatic season and for Milanese ballet, Milan's Teatro alla Scala collects in its spaces portraits and busts of great musicians, such as Guseppe Verdi, to whom two rooms are dedicated; autographed letters, stage masks and costumes, mementos of the women related to the music and to the great authors - Giuditta Pasta, Rossigni's Apprentice, Donizetti's wife. The 'Museo teatrale alla Scala' also has a library, with more than 45.000 volumes, whereas in the Palazzo dei Giureconsulti there is a collection of old musical instruments. January.2002
