Frank Stella: an Italian in America

Italians in the world, it is a well-known fact, have often had important and appreciated roles. They have distinguished themselves through character and helpfulness, like Frank Stella, son of an Italian emigrant from the 20's and now friend of world famed artists such as Pavarotti and the powerful in politics. From the voice of his son Philip we gather the witnessing of this singular life.

Can you tell us your father's story?
My father was left an orphan when he was six. My grandfather drowned in the Missouri lake and my grandmother followed him a year later of a broken heart. The sixth of thirteen children, he had a poor yet not unhappy childhood. His siblings, some of whom already married, after my grandmothers tragic disappearance decided to live all together and rented a farm. This way my father could make a living starting to work very young. With the advent of the second world war he enrolled in the Air Force, initially as an ordinary soldier. In the years of the war he distinguished himself for his temperament and grew in rank. During an action he was injured and was treated by a nurse named Martha: my mother. My father used to call her is angel, because in the sad hours of his stay in the hospital she appeared and disappeared silently. They got married, but my father did not abandon the army after the war and with my mother they moved to an air base in Missouri

When did he decide to change?
With the birth of his fourth son my father considered his work in the army finished and he opened, with the help of his siblings, a restaurant in Detroit. It was the first of a long series. The food was cooked the Italian way, so tasty and substantial; he was asked more ad more catering services at a very high level. Even the White House and university canteens got served by Frank Stella. For my father, however, this was not enough, he wanted to do more. "I was helped by my siblings, why shouldn't I help the needy?" - he would say. So he approached the clerical circles, initially as a volunteer and then taking care of the emarginated. This helpful and unselfish approach of his was noted by the White House, which helped him in the organization of the circles for the emarginated. At the same time he also was interested in music and art, great passions of his. He was awarded the commissions for the restructuring of some theatres and monuments in Detroit. He received the honoris causa degree in history of art and Pavarotti asked him to organize a concert in Detroit.

What does your father do today?
He works. He was left a widower 4 years ago, and in that occasion Clinton was very close to him. Work fills his life, he couldn't do without it. He still occupies himself with the volunteer circles and he is always willing to give a hand to those who really need it.

What characterized this helpfulness in your father?
The Italian matrix. For my father, the center of everyday life divided by family's rhythms. Where there is a united family there is happiness, even if poor. Us children also received the same education. The grandchildren, completely Americanized today, are so influenced by this vision that my daughter Giulia has decided to come and study in Rome, to breathe Italian air...
