The world is seeing a growing desire for the Italian language. Japanese people studying Giuseppe Verdi and Egyptian guides working with tourists (or would it be best to say used to work?), specialised North American workers that use our machines and an infinity of other categories, and that’s not counting children and grandchildren of the world’s immigrants.Ambassador Francesco Aloisi draws a sketch of this tendency, as general manager for Cultural Promotion of the Foreign Ministry.
The ministry has organised, with the Accademia della Crusca, the first week of Italian Language in the World, which will be held at the same in a hundred countries from the 15th to the 20th of October, to culminate in a 24-hour non-stop videoconference the 18th October.
All Italian Culture Institutes in the world will take part; a unprecedented kermis of cultural and artistic initiatives.
Numbers for year 2000 give an idea of the phenomenon: over 55 thousand people attending courses held by the culture institutes; other 100 thousand are learning Italian with “Dante Alighieri”’s courses. These can be added to the over 500 thousand students of the 181 Italian schools abroad.
The schoool institution network is completed with the Italian language and culture courses for other nationals abroad, a service to our collective for their cultural and professional growth, that has involved over 500 thousand users and 500 among managers, teachers and administrative staff, with a state contribution of 45 billion lira.
