"Today's can be called a victory of a lifetime, which I dedicate to my son Marzio, to all Italians in the world who have made sacrifices and to the President of the Republic who has fallen in love with Italians abroad and has understood their Italian-ness".With this declaration Mirko Tremaglia, minister for Italians in the World, conveyed all his satisfaction for the yes of the Senate to the law that gives the go-ahead to voting for Italians residing abroad. There were the beauty of 185 votes - 1 contrary and 10 abstained - which have made possible the constitutional reform approved the past 17th of January.
The law provides for the introduction of territory constituencies: Europe, South America, North and Central America, Africa, Asia, Australia, Oceania and the Antarctic. In each of these a depute or a senator will be elected, as well as the foreign constituency where 6 senators and 12 deputes will be elected. As far as the latter are concerned the subdivision within the territory constituencies will take place proportionally to the number of Italian resident citizens.
The Senate's decision, guaranteed by all the groups of the Casa delle Libertà and of the Ulivo - the Greens abstained and Rifondazione Comunista was contrary-, takes place in a particular moment especially what the occurrences in Argentina, a Nation where the Italian community is in very high numbers.
For this matter, during the voting, an agenda was presented by the DS Senators' President Gavino Angius, with guidelines to Italian diplomatic authorities, in Argentina, about the urgent repatriation for work reasons of Italians who had started the paperwork for the obtainment of the citizenship.
The same agenda sees, also, a further allocation to the articles of direct and indirect assistance for Italians in Argentina who find themselves in difficulty.
Minister Tremaglia also referred to the Argentine situation, declaring: "For some time I have been committed to reinforce the diplomatic network and I also obtained an increase of more than 80 billion lira for direct assistance. I will meet the Fiat representatives to find out what will happen to their Argentine plants, where 1.300 Italians are employed. I would like to hear that just like their Italian plants workers are not being fired, also our fellow countrymen employed in the Argentine Fiat will be able to keep their job".
