The Italian Yacht Club, established in Genoa in 1879, is the most ancient sailing club of the Mediterranean, counting today around 1200 members and 295 yachts flying the society’s burgee. The Club has as its aims to promote yachting, organise regattas and National and International cruises, and trainer young people to sailing sport.
Since its first years the YCI became Italian sailing and boating’s reference point and, associating to other Circles (Naples, Palermo, Trieste, Venice), it brought to the creation of F.I.V. (Italian Sailing Federation).
In the course of the years the International connotation of the Italian Yacht Club has been strengthening. Twinning ties and reciprocity unite the Italian Yacht Club with the main European circles: Royal Thames Yacht Club, London; Real Club Nautico de Barcelona, Barcelona; Yacht Club de Monaco, Monte Carlo; Société Nautique de Geneve, Cologny; Yacht Club of Greece, Piraeus.
From an organisational point of view, as well as various collaborations and patronisations of many National and International events, the Italian Yacht Club offers every year some “classic” appointments for sailing such as the International Regattas of the Lido di Albaro, the Spring Regattas in Portofino, the Giraglia.
The sporting history of the Club, started in the distant 1880, is full of ventures: from the victory of the France Cup by H.R.H. the Duke of Abruzzi’s 10 ton. "Artica", to the gold medal conquered by the 8 metres long "Italia" at Kiel’s XI Olympics in 1936, to the taking part in the America's Cup challenge, in 1987 in Freemantle, with the 12 metres S.I. "Italia", to the more recent medals conquered in various sailing classes in the Olympics, e and world, European and Italian championships.
The Sailing Office of the YCI, coordinates men and means to provide Members with mooring, launching and haulage. For limited times periods, the same services are also available for passing through yachts.
