Created the 23rd October 1863, the Club Alpino Italiano (Italian Alpine Club) is the oldest National association. Objectives of the Club are teaching the protection and respect of nature, as well as the knowledge of the Apennines and the Alpes.Its activities on the territory are various: not just the "great mountain climbing", but also easier excursions, mountain skiing, speleology and much more, associated to various publications and cultural initiatives.
The number of members has recently gone over the figure of 300.000 members, old and young, all motivated by love for the mountain and animated by a spirit of volunteering.
The club, divided in sections present in all Regions, from Sardinia to Sicily, from South to North, is organized according to many technical organs, who take care of the various activity sectors of the Club.
Made up by commissions and other bodies, these organs have specific skills to morally and technically direct the single sections.
There are many fields the commissions deal with: Medicine, Speleology, Materials and Techniques, Protection of mountain environment, Youth alpinism, Publications, Mountain Refuges and Alpine Works, Law, Cinema, Cross-country skiing and Excursions, Avalanche Service, Alpinism and Alpine Skiing Schools.
There is also a Central Scientific Committee and a National Library.
