The Italian army had them retired and seeing one in the countryside is almost an event. Mules and donkeys are no longer part of the Italian agricultural landscape and when we meet them in Greece or other countries we feel like we come from a different world. Those who are nostalgic about these sweet animals, however, are many, and they’re not giving up; as well as a large platoon of ex-«alpini» (mountain soldiers) who for years have been fighting with paperwork bullets with the Military Staff to «recall» to full service mules in the battalions of the black feathers, there are also those who propose themselves as web instructors to teach how to conduct the animals. No joke.
This is the purpose behind the AIVAM, Italian Association for the Valorisation of the Donkey and the Mule, a non-profit cultural association legally set up in 1990 further to the initiative of a group of people who share, as well as the liking for these animals, a love for mountains and nature.
On the website you’ll find loads of information and a true manual to learn to «lead» the animal. Naturally the association develops and offers various solutions to try out the experience, organising trekking, courses, excursions.
