Virtual Cimabue

The over 120 thousand fragments of Cimabue’s Vela del San Matteo in the Basilica Superiore di San Francesco in Assisi, crumbled to the ground in the 1997 earthquake, will be reassembled owing to a digital technique created by the National Council of Research and by the Central Restoration Institute.

A huge job, which only a digital application has made possible to bring back to light one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian art.

The fresco, about 35 metres squared, had completely crumbled, leaving only 120 thousand fragments and wide “holes”. Owing to the creation of a Data Base, restorers will be able to select and carefully match the fragments needed with mathematic algorithms, and thus obtain a virtual reproduction of the image, including the missing parts.

The virtual reproduction will be able to follow step by step the actual one, thus allowing also an overall vision of the fresco.
