The archipelago of the Isole Borromee is in the center of the Lago Maggiore, right in front of Stresa, in a landscape frame of rare beauty and inspiration.Better known of the three, Isola Bella, where the Count Carlo III Borromeo in 1670 erected a palace and a wonderful garden in honour of his wife Isabella (whence the island’s name).
Various artists at the time worked on it - Crivelli, Vismara, Richini , Fontana – transforming the island with flowered terraces, flights of steps, courtyards, caves, fountains, green water bottoms and rare plants.
The palace has a central body and three lateral bodies, inside inestimable works of art such as tapestries, furniture, paintings, antiques.
The Isola Madre is the largest, famous for its flowering of azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias, an enchanted place where the rarefied atmosphere leads to silence. From 1978 the XVI century Palace can be visited, where there are collections of dolls, china and uniforms.
The smallest and most peculiar is the Isola dei Pescatori which encloses a lively and picturesque village, with narrow and winding alleyways.
Restaurants offer simple cuisine preparing various dish recipes with lake fish.
