A city on water

Celebrated by writers, poets, painters, directors. Loved and appraised by simple people and by intellectuals around the world: Venice, a name which recalls infinite suggestions.

Magical city, with an atmosphere which is extraordinarily unique, built on the water, travelled by narrow alleyways (the "calli " ) that open up onto wide squares (the "campielli" ) or which suddenly end up onto the Grande Canal leaving the tourist stunned and surprised in front of the immense expanse of water and the palaces mirrored in it.

Venice , risen on the islands of the lagoon around the 500's, has had a completely different development compared to other Italian and European cities. Maintaining close relations with the East through what was left of the Byzantine empire, Venetians built one of the most powerful economic powers of the Renaissance accumulating great riches, among which an unspecified number of works of art.

Among monumental churches the Basilica of San Marco, which stands out on the famous square by the same name, deserves a visit also because of the rich spiritual history surrounding it.

Considered an authentic jewel of the Venetian baroque and an absolute masterpiece of world baroque, the Church of Santa Maria della Salute looks out majestic over the Grand Canal with its curvaceous rhythms and its swirls.

Important collections of precious canvases can be admired at the famous "School", citizens confraternities who carried out activities with social ends. For example, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco once took care of assisting people with the plague, today it gathers the greatest review of Tintoretto works. At the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni, on the other hand, you will find a collection of Carpaccio paintings.

For archaeology lovers, the Archaeological Museum in San Marco square possesses vast collections of Greek and roman statues, Etruscan and Greek ceramics, Egyptian mummies, Roman frescoes, coins, small sculptures.

The Palazzo Ducale hosts the Museo dell'Opera which contains a rich collection of sculptures, weapons and period items. The palace presents a complex and fascinating decoration that has made it renown all over the world.

In the magnificent halls of the baroque palace Cą Rezzonico, the "Museo del Settecento Veneziano" exhibits works of Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, Francesco and Gianantonio Guardi, Rosalba Carriera.

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection (eccentric American millionaire who loved Venice and stayed there for a long time) has its seat near Cą Venier dei Leoni on Grand Canal, and hosts one of the major collections of modern and contemporary art in the world.
