The Lago d'Orta , long ago called "Cusius", lies west of the Lago Maggiore: rich with history and ancient monuments, it is surrounded by green hills and is equipped with excellent hotels and campsites. The best known location is Orta San Giulio, with its characteristic square, the Palazzotto (1582), the Sacro Monte with 20 chapels dedicated to the life of S. Francesco d'Assisi (1591-1770) and, on the lake, S. Giulio island with its Romanic basilisk (XII century), some frescoes and ambos in Oira Stone (XII century).
Other important centres are: Gozzano, with the local church S. Giuliano (XVII century), the Romanic church of S. Lorenzo, the small church of Luzzara (frescoes from the XV century) and upon the hill, looking over the lake, the tower of Buccione (IV-V century); Omegna, important industrial centre with ecxcelllent sports installations and for bathing in Bagnella (church of S. Ambrogio from the XIII century).
To ease tourists in their choice for which itineraries to follow to discover the lake's beauties and the whole surrounding area, local organizations, museums and touristically interesting towns surrounding the lake and on the sides of the Mottarone have set up, in 1997 the Ecomuseo Cusius.
The Ecomuseum is basically a circuit of natural, cultural and trading beauties of the area, divided in three different itineraries: material culture (ethnographic museum and of the musical instrument in Quarna Sotto, the museum of the tap and its technology, the museums of the umbrella and the parasol, and more) , art (Calderaia foundation, the collection of sacred art of Forno di Omega, the island of San Giulio - a real open air museum - and so on) and nature (the Alpinia garden, the Selviana di Agrano alp, etc.).
