The "tappetari" in Camaiore

This is a tradition that has its origin centuries ago.

According to a popular legend, some Spanish house workers serving Carlos Ludovico de Borbon suggested to the population of Camaiore to decorate the roads of the town with flower carpets for the procession of "Corpus Domini" that would have taken place the 6th of June 1844.

To celebrate the Christian festival large “paintings” are created using coloured sawdust instead of flowers, mixed with aniline-based colourings on: it is a true test of ability halfway between craftsmanship and the "work of art".

The designs are elaborated on paper and reproduce episodes from the life of Jesus, geometric patterns, floral prints or creations derived from the artist’s imagination.

The "tappetari" (carpet makers) work ceaselessly during the whole night before the procession, keeping a strict reserve about the depictions. The available space for each is of a length of about 40/50 meters and a width of 3 meters.

The "Corpus Domini" procession starts early in the morning and, with its passage, erases these “road masterpieces” that lived, only for a few hours.
